A small effort is enough to transform the look of your furniture: find out how to replace knobs and handles!
Sometimes, when we look around a room we realize that something is wrong or off: the room perhaps looks a bit old or maybe a bit boring. And it can feel like this even if nothing is broken, worn out or is so damaged that it needs to be replaced completely. In cases like this, small interventions are enough to transform the appearance of the furniture if it is still in good condition. Most of the time you will probably consider repainting these furniture units, but there is also more that can be done: perhaps even combining these techniques with a new coat of paint – for example, one could change your furniture’s knobs and handles.
Unless the furniture has a very defined and particular design or style and is covered with intricate inlays and decorations (like classical Chippendale or Chesterfield furniture, for example), replacing the knobs and handles with more unusual or striking ones can really go a long way to breathing new life into our furniture. Be inspired by the ideas described below:
If the cabinet has simple lines and a neutral color like white, you might venture to put different colored knobs on each drawer.
To create a country or marine touch or feel, just use pieces of rope of various thicknesses for the handles.
Use twine and wooden beads of various sizes: they are beautiful and natural, but can also be painted in colors that contrast with those of the furniture.
Online and in furniture stores you can find truly decorative knob and handle styles in the shape of flowers or animals, which could make your furniture truly unique.
There is also an bunch of tutorials online for creating and using DIY door handles.
A modern chest of drawers equipped with handles as long as the width of drawer itself: this is a very different type of handle idea.
And if you want to recycle old objects, you can really find a thousand ways to get creative (like using thread bobbins as knobs, shown in this photo).
Bits of wood in a disc or circular shape (perhaps even untreated or unsanded) offer a timeless, rustic touch.
Leather off-cuts and leather straps of various colors - these give off a country feel, but with modern taste.
Old toys, such as those made of rigid rubber and in the shape of, for example, animals, can be painted and used as fun handles.
And you could even seal real leaves and flowers in transparent resin!
