Every day we use many different objects to carry out a myriad of necessary activities. So it follows that in the various rooms of our home, as well as in the office area, there are tools and utensils that are used very often and therefore wear out fairly quickly. And when they do, we are forced to replace them periodically with new items.

However, saving money is important and is also good for the environment if we can consume less, so it is good to know about some tips that will help us avoid unnecessary waste, by allowing us to use many items for much longer than normal. Here are some of the most popular tips on the internet dealing with this subject:

If you sprinkle a little salt on candles before lighting them, they will burn more slowly - just like when you put them in the freezer before lighting them. The salt protects the wax, which in turn, takes longer to melt, so your candles will last longer.

How many times does someone in the house end up pulling too much toilet paper off the roll hanging in the bathroom? And it's hard to fix this by rolling the excess back onto the roll and then taking only what you need.  One way to prevent the roll from turning too fast and the paper spooling off it onto the floor, is to squeeze the roll so that the cardboard tube in the center also becomes an oval, making it more difficult to rotate and spool out of control.

The sponges with which we wash our dishes, or that we use on the kitchen surfaces, come into contact with many different types of dirt and soaks them up. In addition to washing them thoroughly after each use, and with the help of white vinegar, you can help sanitize them by putting them in the microwave and "cooking" them. After having soaked the sponge in water (or even in vinegar), "cook" them in a microwave for 30 seconds at medium-high power setting.

Also, if you use a dedicated sponge to clean surfaces that have come into contact with raw meat, only that sponge will need to be cleaned and changed more often than the others.

Non-stick pots and pans can last much longer if they are periodically treated with oil, which helps restore their coating (when it is not too damaged). Fill the pan with hot soapy water, simmer a little while and then empty and rinse it out. Then, after drying thoroughly with absorbent paper, pour a tablespoon of vegetable oil onto the inside bottom and spread it all over the entire internal surface. Heat the pan for a minute, remove from heat and let it cool. Remove any excess oil with absorbent paper.

When you take the towels out of the washing machine, shake them out hard before hanging them, so they will be softer when they dry. It is also always better not to wash too many towels together in one wash as this stresses their fibres and shortens their life.

If a sweater has shrunk a little after a wash, you can still get it back to how it was. One way to is to soak it in warm (not hot) water in which you have poured a generous amount of hair conditioner, which can be worked into the fibers of the fabric. After half an hour, try to stretch the sweater back to its original size by gently and evenly using your hands, and without applying too much force.

And bread, just like flour, can be conveniently frozen to last longer. And when you defrost it, just use a microwave or oven to make it soft, tasty and fragrant.
