Do you have a display case in the house? Find out how to make it shine and look as good as new

Showcases are elegant pieces of furniture that often are deployed in living rooms and lounges: these shelving units made almost entirely of glass - from the external walls to the shelves to the door that encloses them - are designed to display everything we put inside them. Showcases are similar to display cases, but are more functional, because they are typically used to contain objects we will occasionally use (like a special dinner set and/or silver cutlery collections).

In most cases showcases contain crockery - perhaps even our most precious one that is reserved only for important occasions; but more and more frequently they also become the piece of furniture in which to exhibit some collection of objects that are particularly dear to us, such as miniatures, silverware, precious objects of art or irreplaceable items.

All these items therefore deserve to be always clearly visible - and when the glass of this furniture is covered with a film of dust or is veiled by stains of dirt that obscure the view, they lose their beauty. Returning them to their former glory, however, is easy and inexpensive.

Just like the furniture in any other room, windows and glass panes get dirty every day and, being made only of glass, dust and dirt are much more visible on them when present. To clean them, you can use the same methods that are used for windows and mirrors: after having quickly dusted them off (with a vacuum cleaner or dust-removing cloths or microfibre), you can then use the specific products for glass or  you can use the following:

  • Denatured alcohol and newspaper: roll up a sheet of newspaper until you have a ball and moisten it with alcohol which is rated 70°. Rub it on the glass using linear movements and without going over the same point too many times (otherwise you will leave streaks). If there is not too much dirt, you can moisten the same sheet of newspaper otherwise to use on the other glass panes. The important thing is not to soak it too much, and gradually decrease the amount of alcohol when  the stains disappear;
  • White vinegar, to be mixed in equal parts with water (also distilled water is fine); put the mix in a spray bottle, shake and then spray everything onto a clean microfibre cloth, which you will pass over the glass. If the bottle sprays very finely, you can spray directly onto the glass and immediately wipe it away with the cloth, always trying not to make circular movements that leave visible streaks.
  • Talcum powder: fill a spray container with 350 ml of very hot water, pour in a spoonful of talcum powder and shake well until the talcum dissolves. Spray on the glass and immediately wipe away with a cloth, rubbing with regular movements. If it seems to you that streaks remain on the glass, then spray the mixture on the cloth and then wipe it on the surface to be cleaned. As soon as you have finished working on the entire surface, and when the glass is completely dry, wipe with another dust-catching cloth to remove any residual talcum powder.

When you fill them up again, your display cases will really look great!
