How many times does it happen to us that we soil a sweater, a dress, shirt or other garment with splashes of gravy while we eat? Or maybe some greasy or oily food ends up on our clothes or on the tablecloth. If we are not careful, even sheets and upholstery can get dirty when eating on the sofa or having a snack or breakfast in bed, and these difficult stains cannot always be completely removed.

At home, however, we have ingredients that we can use as DIY remedies to eliminate these stains and be able to go back to using the tablecloths and clothing without any problems. Find out which ones and how to use them by reading further:

Sodium bicarbonate (Baking soda)

Baking soda works on oily or greasy spots that have just formed. So, in case there is an excess of grease, remove it with a spoon or the blade of a knife, and then sprinkle the part of the stained fabric with baking soda, taking care to keep the fabric flat. Leave it to act until the baking soda absorbs all the grease / oil possible, then remove the soda by gently passing over the fabric with a spoon or with the help of a brush or toothbrush. At this point you can wash the garment following the directions on the label.

Similar to baking soda, you can also use corn starch, potato starch, talcum powder or chalk.

How to remove stains from jeans:

  • Wet the stain by dabbing it with a little damp absorbent paper
  • Sprinkle with baking soda, and leave for at least ten minutes
  • Brush off the excess baking soda with an old toothbrush
  • Put a drop of dish soap or laundry detergent on the stain, and scrub in with the same toothbrush
  • Wash the trousers at the highest temperature indicated on their label.

Oily stains tend to become more difficult to remove the longer they remain on the fabric, eventually reaching the point of becoming permanent.

White vinegar

You can also use white vinegar (apple, wine, distillate, rice), and to do this you will need to prepare a basin with hot water and vinegar in equal parts, and leave the fabric to soak for 20 minutes or more. Then rub the fabric against itself in the affected area, in order to try to make the stain go away as much as possible. After this pre-wash, proceed to wash as you usually do in the washing machine. This is a technique that you can use even after removing the bulk of the stain with the baking soda method.
