A homemade disinfectant to clean surfaces: find out how to prepare it in a few simple steps
A thorough cleaning of our home guarantees us the ideal conditions of hygiene in various rooms, and certainly some need it more often than others. However, if you also want to disinfect certain surfaces, such as some bathroom fixtures or kitchen worktops, or door handles and similar - and depending on the material - you can use different products that can be prepared at home.
Bleach, alcohol or hydrogen peroxide can help us achieve these results, but these are substances to be used with great caution. Always avoid mixing them in the wrong way and alway make sure not to overdo the doses. Also, whenever you use disinfectant products, it is always good to ventilate the room and wear protective masks and gloves.

Using water and bleach
The doses vary depending on how concentrated you want your product to be.
- For a very strong and more aggressive product: 300 ml of bleach per 4 liters of water (if, for example, you need to wash a floor that can be treated with bleach), or a spray bottle with 80 ml of bleach per 1 liter of water.
- For a medium concentration product: 120 ml of bleach per 4 liters of water, or 2 tablespoons of bleach to one liter of water.
- For a lighter product: 80 ml of bleach to 4 liters of water, or 4 teaspoons of bleach to one liter of water.
The more concentrated a product is, the faster it will be able to disinfect, but they are also more dangerous if they come into contact with our bodies. Therefore, it is always better to first try the lower concentrations, which need to remain in place a little longer before being rinsed off in order to disinfect properly. The brand of bleach used also affects the required duration of exposure, and you can investigate each particular brand. Generally, it is recommended to let the products act for about ten minutes.
With denatured alcohol
- 350 ml of 95% ethyl alcohol
- 100 ml of distilled water
- half a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide
- 30 drops of essential oil to taste (tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender are amongst those most recommended)
Mix distilled water and hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle, add the essential oils and finally the alcohol, then mix everything together well.
With white vinegar
This is less effective than other remedies, but certainly less harmful to us and less aggressive on many surfaces.
Mix equal parts white vinegar and distilled water, let it act on the surfaces for half an hour before rinsing off.
Great job!
