Cut your hair at home: discover the simplest method to obtain an excellent layered effect

Going to the hairdresser is a little pampering that we allow ourselves periodically, but sometimes there is some reason that prevents us from doing so. It may also be the case that you are simply feeling adventurous and decide you want to give your hair a cut by yourself.

Cutting your hair yourself at home is a bit of an act of courage: even if we have the dexterity to style hair, doing it by ourselves is never as easy as working on someone else's head. But there are methods that help you deal with this challenge without having to contort yourself and use a dozen mirrors. For example, if you want to cut your hair in such a way as to have it layered in front and with a slightly "U" shape on the shoulders, read on to find out how.

You will need:

  • Brush and comb
  • 2 or 3 rubber bands
  • Scissors, suitable for cutting hair
  • Optional: a ruler

How to proceed

  • Wet your hair well, or cut it immediately after washing it: the hair must be perfectly untangled and smooth. When wet, hair is much easier to cut, as it tends to "move" a little less.
  • With the help of a comb (with fine teeth) bring the entire mass of hair forward, brushing from the nape of the neck to the forehead. You need to make sure you create a ponytail right at the top and center of the forehead, so comb all your hair very thoroughly and evenly.
  • Gather up the tail with one of the elastic bands, tightening right in the center of the hairline above the forehead. The elastic bands shouldn't let any strands of hair move at all, so tighten them well. Make sure that all the hair covering the head does not have "lumps": the hair must all be brought forward and kept tightly secured.
  • If your hair is very long and you want to cut only the ends, tighten an elastic band along the ends too - if not, go to the next step.
  • Put the last elastic band, always very tightly, just above the line you want to cut. This will act as a guide for the cut.
  • Cut the part under this elastic band. To avoid moving it, do not cut in a single cut, especially if the lock is thick: proceed in small steps, possibly also tilting the blades a little so that they do not touch the hair horizontally but at a slightly oblique angle.
  • Proceed slowly and calmly: in the end you will have the tail still tightened by the elastic bands, which will now be cut perfectly evenly, with the hair all cut at the same length.
  • Now you can undo your hair and comb it back to its' normal lay. You will see that the hair will layer forward and create a kind of "U" line on the shoulders. You can also adjust the style of the tips in the front, but always have a lot of patience and proceed by cutting only very short pieces of hair.

There are also those who divide the tail, after having tied it on the forehead, into two or three locks, always keeping the rubber bands at the end of each and at the same height.
