Shutter cords: the most useful tips to clean and make them look like new again
There are many objects in the house that we touch every day and do not clean often, such as switches, handles, knobs and ... the cord of the shutters (also known as shutter belts)! The latter in particular are among the things that really hardly ever comes to mind to wash, yet we use them every day - so just like any other object we touch with our hands, they get a little dirty every time we use them. And then they are exposed to the same dust that settles on the curtains and walls.
If we look closely, we will realize that they are in fact covered with dirt and/or dust, and so when it comes time to do a thorough cleaning of a room, it will be good to remember these cords too. But how do you wash them? We show you some useful methods below:

Fortunately, there is no need to disassemble anything to clean the shutter cords: we proceed by treating them gradually, taking care only of the part we touch every day. However, if for any reason you should or could take them apart without any problems, you can safely wash them in the washing machine! In other cases you can use:
- Baking soda: just create a viscous paste in a small bowl, mixing the baking soda with a little water, and then put on rubber gloves and rub the paste carefully all over the cord. You can also use a slightly damp microfiber cloth. Let the paste act for a few minutes and then remove the baking soda with another wet cloth, keeping clean water at hand to rinse it piece by piece.
- In less serious cases, even just a little soap and water may suffice. If the cords are made of rubber, you can use dish detergent, while for those of heavy and rough cloth, you can use a laundry soap, or even Marseilles soap. You will need to scrub it with a sponge or soft cloth, and then use another cloth to rinse.
- Magic Eraser: This product is also useful for this particular type of cleaning. You just have to moisten a tip, and rub it on both sides of the cord.
- Steam Cleaner: If you have one at home this is the most convenient option if the cord is not too dirty.
- Foam for rugs and carpets: If you have this product at home, it is also great for shutter cords. Apply it with a dry cloth, let it act for a few minutes and then remove everything with a second cloth and a little water.
