No more fogged glass: 5 simple ways to avoid condensation developing on mirrors and windows

When the temperatures drop and at home we turn on the heaters, cook or take a bath or shower, we always notice that condensation forms on the windows and mirrors, which then produces many rivulets of water that in the long run leave streaks on the glass .

It is difficult to prevent these surfaces from misting up as the thermal shock that causes this phenomenon cannot be prevented, unless the latest generation of anti-fog mirrors are used. But it is possible to minimize the formation of condensation by resorting to a few simple home tricks, such as those mentioned below.

  • Surfactant products such as toothpaste, laundry detergent, shaving foam - these kinds of products prevent water molecules from adhering to the glass. Just spread a very light film on the glass, with a soft and lint-free cloth, continuing to rub gently until the glass itself again becomes transparent and reflective. NOTE: since  an invisible film of the product is left on the mirror, if the humidity in the room is high, you may eventually see rivulets of water mixing with these products, therefore you will need to wash the mirrors and repeat the procedure regularly.
  • White vinegar: mix it in equal parts with water and wipe the glass with a cloth. You can also add a few drops of soap liquid.
  • Anti-fog for car windows, or car wax: as in vehicles, these products can also be applied to windows in the home, rubbing them directly on the surface.
  • Glycerin: is one of the favorite remedies for bathroom mirrors, is non-toxic and readily available in pharmacies. It is always used by spreading an invisible film on the mirror, as in the case of shaving foam and the like.

The results will differ depending on the conditions that arise in the home in terms of temperature, humidity and even water hardness, so some methods may be more effective than others. And in any case, it is good to wash the windows from time to time, so as to remove the old film of anti-fog products and renew them from time to time. Have you ever used any of these tricks at home?
