Denim garments are a must in any wardrobe: whether they are trousers, shirts, jackets or skirts, we all have some in our closet, and maybe they are also the garments we wear the most often. They are comfortable and versatile, they can be used on many different occasions, and they generally stand the test of time very well.

However, when some clothes are no longer the right size for us, or are really worn out by prolonged use, instead of throwing them away, we can recycle the fabric for some creative project. For example, a small piece of a pair of jeans is enough to make an adorable handbag, which can then be customized as desired.

What you need:

  • cut out from jeans (or other denim source) measuring 30 x 30 cm
  • cut out of a fabric of your choice to line the inside of the bag, also 30 x 30 cm
  • a magnetic button closure/fastener (if you do not want the bag to remain completely open like a shopping bag)
  • handles (circular or semi-circular)
  • needle and thread
  • tweezers
  • scissors

Fold the denim cutout in half, and on the side of the fold measure 28 cm from the bottom, marking a point 6 cm from the edge towards the other side.

On the opposite side (always lengthwise), locate a point 16 cm from the bottom, and join this point with a curved line with the one 6 cm in the center of the cutout. You will use these measurements to cut two pieces of jeans and two pieces of lining fabric, all to the same size.

Now open the pieces of fabric and sew the edges together, with the straight sides facing: the seam will have to run along the base (it will be the gondo of the bag) and going up on the 16 cm sides.

Then sew 2 cm from the corners in both pieces, aligning the seam of the base with that of each corresponding side. (You will find a link to the video tutorial at the bottom of the article).

If you want to use a fastener (to keep the top closed), now is the time to apply it, in the center and high enough on the lining, starting with the side with the visible seams. Depending on the closure model chosen, you will have to apply it differently. Generally with magnetic buttons there are two pieces, to be inserted into the fabric by making small cuts. Each is composed of two halves that must face on the two sides of the fabric, and it is always better to reinforce that point with an extra piece of fabric, in this case you could use other jeans.

Now put on the piece of jeans with the wrong side out, and the lining with the straight side out. Insert the lining inside the jeans, aligning the side seams, and then sew the two pieces together without going through the 6 cm side, which will remain open.

Turn the bag inside out and sew the handles into position, and your bag is ready!
